New community turns out for Neighbour Day event
More than 120 residents and community members from The Village at Wellard came together yesterday to get acquainted and explore ways to contribute to a safer new neighbourhood.
The ‘National Neighbour Day’ community barbeque was jointly hosted by the estate’s developers – Peet Limited and the Department of Housing, Kwinana Neighbourhood Watch, the Town of Kwinana, local Police and the Rotary Club of Kwinana, with support from Roger Cook, Member for Kwinana, at Linear Park.
A delicious free sausage sizzle, live music and children’s mini golf was enjoyed by all at the gathering in Linear Park.
Peet Limited Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Brendan Gore said community events like the barbeque were a great way for residents to meet other people living in their area.
“It is important to know who you share your neighbourhood with,” said Mr Gore. “People who came along to the barbeque were keen to start making those vital connections which help build a community and make it safer.”
“It was also a good opportunity for residents to meet their local police, Neighbourhood Watch representatives, Member for Parliament, council representatives and other community members and, together, learn how to build a safer community,” he said.
Kwinana Neighborhood Watch Chairman, Mike Booth, said he was very pleased to see so many kids, parents, grandparents and dogs enjoying the event, having fun and learning about making their homes more secure.
“We had a lot of interest in joining Neighbourhood Watch from new residents, and one lady has nominated to become our manager for The Village at Wellard estate,” Mr Booth said.
“Other people put their hands up to be street representatives, which is great news because it means we can start building a Neighbourhood Watch network in the new community at The Village at Wellard.”
Many residents also took advantage of a free engraving service to help protect their bicycles, stereos and other valuables.
Residents who missed the barbeque but would like information about becoming a Neighbourhood Watch representative should contact the Kwinana Neighborhood Watch Office on 9439 4030.
The Village at Wellard has been designed to encourage greater use of public transport, cycling and walking as well as promoting social cohesion, social diversity, conservation, public safety and community revitalisation. It incorporates designing out crime principles for fencing, lighting, the layout of buildings and public spaces, ease of access and passive surveillance.
The estate was Perth’s first new transit oriented development on the Mandurah railway line and features its own train station. Residents can travel by rail to the Perth CBD within 30 minutes and to Mandurah within 20 minutes.
The Village at Wellard is close to existing shopping areas, schools, tertiary facilities and other services. It features community facilities, high quality landscaping, a private primary school and 28 hectares of landscaped parks, 17 hectares of native bush and 10 hectares of wetlands.
With more than 744 of the estate’s 2,700 homesites now sold, The Village at Wellard community continues to grow with more than 350 households now established at the estate.
There are a range of homesite options currently available for people looking to make this multi-award winning estate home, from large homestead lots, to more traditional sized family lots and low maintenance cottage lots.
An added benefit for all purchasers is Peet’s Flying Start package which provides level blocks with retaining walls where required, front garden landscaping and reticulation – making it easier and more affordable to build and establish a new home. |
