Does your community group, project or event need a jump start?
Over just 3 years, the program has helped 27 different community projects with around $40,000 in much needed funds.
One of last year's successful projects was a series of cooking classes hosted by the Frank Konecny Community Centre in Parmelia for children in the Kwinana region. The Centre's adult cooking classes had already proved popular, but with childhood obesity a hot topic, attention turned to classes for kids that were educational and fun.
Family Support Co-ordinator Sue Webber said the cooking classes taught children about the importance of healthy eating and how to prepare nutritious food, while also providing an environment where important interaction and socialisation skills could be developed.
"The grant provided by the Department of Housing and Works and Peet Limited enabled the community centre to run the course at a nominal cost which made it accessible to an even greater number of families," she said.
Other successful recipients have included the Rockingham Kwinana Youth Skills Training Scheme who needed materials for woodworking activities, computer skills training and other workshops and the Kwinana Golf Club who used funds to help stage a free Community Open Day.
